Gerry Rafferty R.I.P.

“He was exceptional  when we worked together and very kind to us. As well as a great songwriter he was a really, really good singer with fantastic harmony ideas. The fact that as well as producing Letter From America, he sang backing harmonies on it, meant a lot to us. A great guy, a fantastic writer, Gerry will be sorely missed and we are greatly saddened at the news.”

Craig and Charlie Reid

* Gerry along with co-producer Hugh Murphy, produced the ‘band version’ of The Proclaimers first hit single, Letter From America in 1987.

www.bbc.co.uk/music/tinthepark/2010/artists/the_proclaimers/

One of the most treasured institutions is an afternoon set on the Main Stage by The Proclaimers, which galvanises the troops and gets the raucous singing started. The Proclaimers opened with the questionable observation that “Now the sun is out and the rain is somewhere else” – not a wildly inaccurate weather forecast but a lyric from the title track of their most recent album Notes & Rhymes. It activated the crowd instantly with its tub-thumping rockabilly rhythm, gutsy vocals and a spirited burst of Craig’s harmonica playing.

In typical Proclaimers’ style, there was to be no pussyfooting around with the setlist – Letter From America, Over And Done With and I’m On My Way were rolled out next, all rollicking tunes guaranteed to lift the spirits in a persistent drizzle. But this is only one aspect of The Proclaimers’ musical character. They also write the most moving hug-thy-neighbour ballads, and Sunshine On Leith provided the perfect moment for a maudlin wallow, embellished here with a mournful fiddle solo. After a pause for the crowd to wipe away a tear and blame it on the rain, they tore into the remainder of their set, including the definitive version of I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles), supported by a raucous crowd.

Those 500 miles passed surprisingly quickly – in fact, it was all over in 45 well-drilled minutes – another Proclaimers set defined by the passion, gusto and gloriously guttural enunciation of the Reids. THE SCOTSMAN

THERE’S nothing like a good old sing-along to raise morale. By 3.20pm on Saturday, when Leith’s finest – The Proclaimers – emerged onto the main stage, the relentless rain was threatening to dampen spirits of punters squelching around in thick mud. But straight off the bat, bespectacled twins Charlie and Craig, with their no-nonsense rock ‘n’ roll sensibilities, had the crowd onside, lifting spirits with a short but sweet hit-packed 40-minute set. It only took most fans a few seconds of the second song to recognise the 1987 classic, Letter from America, provoking a World Cup goal-like response, with an entire stadium of fists punching the air.

Thousands had streamed into the main arena for the home team’s crowd-pleasing set, and they were not disappointed, judging by the en masse vocal participation that at times drowned out the sound system. Every single face singled out on the big screens was singing along, with the fervour obviously too much for one fan’s giant stuffed monkey being passed over heads with its’ polystyrene innards spilling out.

The Reids may have spent much of the 1990s in the wilderness, but as T in the Park demonstrated, their credibility and fan base has soared again, with the pair now firmly pegged as national treasures. On what was otherwise a miserable afternoon, the legendary Leithers were definitely a ray of sunshine on Balado. PERTHSHIRE ADVERTISER

The evening is a celebration of Hibernian Football Clubs progression since 20 years ago when the club faced extinction. A group of Hibs supporters formed the Hands Off Hibs organisation, which raised support from football fans and personalities across Scotland. Amongst events they organised were rallies of support at Easter Road Stadium and the Usher Hall. Craig and Charlie were actively involved in the events and campaigning to save the club.

After mismanagement during the late 1980s, Hibs were on the brink of financial ruin in 1990. The Hands Off Hibs group’s campaign for the continued existence of the club succeeded when Sir Tom Farmer acquired a controlling interest in Hibs. The fans were able to persuade Sir Tom to take control despite the fact that he had no great interest in football; Sir Tom was persuaded in part by the fact that a relative of his had been involved in the rescue of Hibs from financial ruin in the early 1890s.

Friday 4th September

Here is info on great campaign Craig and Charlie are backing taking place at the EICC in Edinburgh on Saturday 3d October. As well as walking a mile themselves during the afternoon, The Proclaimers perform at the Miles for Smiles Ball in the evening.

Miles for Smiles 500 Miles Challenge

Each mile will be allocated to a single minute from 11.10am until 7.30pm.

The one-mile circuit starts and finishes at the EICC in Edinburgh. It consists of two laps of Conference Square (behind the EICC) and Festival Square (in front of the Sheraton). At the half way stage and when you finish you will come right through the EICC. This means that if you’d struggle with a whole mile, there is an opportunity to share your mile with the other half of your team. The course is completely off-road, mainly paved and has no steps – just some gentle slopes and a short, slightly bumpy section – but nothing to stop a wheelchair!

You can do the way you like – which is legal and decent! From singing to cheer leading; from tossing a pancake to piggy back; from bikini clad to toddling; from a pogo stick to wheelchair precision. You can take part as an individual or as a team of any number (within reason!). Miles in the Miles for Smiles 500 miles Challenge will be allocated to the most exciting/imaginative/testing ideas – which are also likely to raise the most sponsorship! . You can take as long as you like to finish your mile. Safe overtaking is allowed!

500 Miles aims to support amputees and other disabled people in Malawi and Zambia in Africa. Their particular focus is the delivery and development of prosthetic and orthotic services. Prostheses are devices which replace body parts which are missing. Orthoses are supports for body parts which don’t function properly. Their work involves funding the education and training of prosthetists and orthotists, establishing and supporting centres which supply prosthetic and orthotic services and funding orthopaedic and plastic surgery which promotes mobility/function. In the UK, the NHS provides prostheses, orthoses and surgery, free to anyone in need. In Malawi and Zambia thousands of men, women and children lose limbs, or the use of them, due to disease, accident or poverty. Many lose their livelihoods, homes or families – some even die.
